In the Brooder
I am new to chicken keeping. The weather is not quite warm enough to put my 5 weekers out, especially at night. I realized their quarters in the brooder were too small, but not before one got pecked mercilessly. I have made a much bigger pen for them and separated her. She seems healed, (still has blue bum and feathers) and now I need to get her back in there. I made a pen within the pen for her so she can be with them but not get hurt. I had tried reintroducing her but they went right after her. We still have the heat lamp on them and I have been getting conflicting advice on what to do next. We are building their coop (or putting it together rather) this weekend, but some say it is still too cold to put them out. Others say they are tough and will be fine. So they are still in the garage with the red light. I feel like they are acting a little crazy- flying around and having lots of energy. I have put dirt and things in there to entertain them. This weekend I will bring them out in a large dog crate turned sideways so that they can start enjoying the outdoors and peck around but be contained. The crate has a divider so I can put them all out together. How do I reintroduce her to the group? They are all same size and age. I was thinking at night, but they don't seem to settle down when I go to bed. When I get up they are laying quietly . SO how do I get her back in the group? Many thanks for your help!!
