I have been a member for several years, but have not been active for some time. I have been raising chickens for about 60 years, mostly bantam breeds, although I have occasionally had large fowl as well. I have also raised pheasants, quail, peacocks, ducks, geese, etc. as well as many types of house-birds, basically anything with feathers. I found out the house-birds were the cause of my allergy symptoms so I sold them. I still raise chickens and will probably have house-birds again when I have a place for them outside the house. I would probably wither and die if I didn't have some kind of bird to serve.
I am particularly interested in breeding chickens for color. I am fascinated with all the different color patterns available in chickens, and the genetics that produce them. At this time i am working with what I think is a new type of barred gene. The chicks hatch out yellow with sometimes a small spot of darker color on their head. Their first feathers are black with very indistinct barring on the wings. When their final feathers come in they will be pretty much like a cuckoo color although with broader bars. So far I have only had roos that presented this way, but I have noticed several pullets that come from the same breeding that appear something like a silver pencilled, with a white neck and tail. I also get a number of roos that resemble crele, only lighter. I also get a lot of wheaten colored pullets.
