Pretty new to chickens - my Mom had chickens and I helped out when visiting. My husband and I are working on our 'homestead' and I've been researching the best way to get started as we should be able to move in this summer.

While researching best way to start chickens, I stumbled over raising quail, and I'm seriously thinking to start with them as we have a 'shed' (35' x 60') and also a 3/4 quonset hut - either of which could be used to get started with quail. Then in a couple years, add in chickens.

Other hobbies . . . gardening, needlework - of all kind, reading, computer programming and game playing, cooking :)

Married, we are both retired. We bought a 3.2 acre 'farm' 3 years ago, with a house that needed a lot of TLC - immediately got a new roof on it - the next spring, got mowers up there and started maintaining the grass and cleaning up the yard a bit, started clearing out the inside of the house when my husband accidently got trapped under the very heavy steel garage door. When he was still pretty sore after a week so an xray later, it was discovered that my husband has cancer and was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's too. Which has slowed us down quite a bit (he doesn't like me going up by myself and has a lot of down days). . .

I've been doing a lot of research, but one area that I haven't found too much about is breeding in a way that doesn't cause too much inbreeding. Found some info about spiral breeding but not too much about how to achieve that, as in keeping the chicks separated when hatching. . . I have ideas but if anyone knows where to look for this information (like good books to buy - not rich enough to buy several books and find they don't have useful information in this subject).

Thanks for reading this and for any pointers!

Hiya, Sonya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

You shouldn't have to purchase anything as if you check out links @N F C provided, you should find what you need. There's a ton of info here in BYC! Make yourself at home!

That is so tragic about your husband, but guess in one way, it was a blessing he got hurt so he could be diagnosed sooner. :hugs Wishing you both the best.

We're glad you're here!
