My chickens here free range, but go in their coop at night. I have a little BB Red hen that quit laying eggs in the coop (laying them some place outside) Then on July 4th she no longer went in the coop at night to be locked up and stayed out all night. I assumed she was sitting on her eggs some where that she previously laid over the last couple weeks. She was a good hider, until this past weekend, we found her and her nest. There's the occasional fox, coyote, raccoon and opossum that come around at night, So I'd like to get her in a small coop just for her self and when her chicks hatch. How do they take to having their nest moved after they have been sitting on it for over a week. She's currently sitting on seven eggs behind one of the barns, in some tall grass/weeds.

I move mine in the dead of night. Set up your broody pen, big dog crate, or whatever, so it's ready to go. In the dark, with a small flashlight (for you) quietly move her and her eggs into the new nest. I pretreat the bedding with some permethrin dust, for possible mites. Lock her in with food and water (not layer) and sneak away. A nice quiet corner is best, not a busy place. It's best to have enough room for her to move away from the nest for elimination, etc, to keep the eggs clean. Mary
