hey ya'll,

my particular situation here is that I have a nice coop and covered run set up, about 15x20' with 7 hens and 1 roo, but it is at a friends where I was renting. we bought a place and now have only a field fence pasture about 5500sqft with 2 goats. I want to put the flock in there with the goats, the goats also have a 10x8 corral and I'll fix the birds up near or in that. but I have to move the birds over before I can disassemble their old digs and move it over. I don't want to build an entire new coop and run!!

So I am thinking I can just clip all their wings and set up some temp housing for them. using animal carriers and some minimal fencing.

The exterior field fence is a good 5 feet, but there are some tall juniper trees near the perimeter.

Will the fence keep them in with clipped wings? Will they hop up the tree and over?
What issues anyone have keeping them with dairy goats? aside from likely getting to their food.

thanks

Can't answer your fencing questions, but I can speak to the goat issue somewhat. My hens free range in the same field as my sheep and there are no problems. Goats might be more curious than sheep though?

well, got'em over last night. used a pet carrier. they are so easy to grab from the coop in the dark.
clipped their wings this morning they all seem to like the huge new yard.
first thing I am building for them is a nest box. will just affix it to the inner goat corral.

I am wondering if I should place it any lower to the ground due their wing being clipped?
how high can they get by jumping?

My nesting boxes are only a foot off the ground, up on straw bales actually, not because of clipped wings but because some of the old girls sleep in them, and even the old arthritic one manages to hop up in there.
