I have been using this type of roost/droppings box for some time and I can attest to the fact that it is easy to use and cut down on cleaning time for the coops. I just put a little wood shavings in the bottom.

Rather than making one roost the length of the coop I make two. It's much easier to handle.

Great idea! We were just going to install the big girl roost in our new coop this weekend. Yours looks easy to clean. I was going to install a 2x4 the length of the coop and a poop board 4" below it. I'll have to think about your idea now.

interesting...is that metal sheeting at the bottom??? and is it removeable from the box??? By the way, love your avatar Opa!

I'm sorry I didn't offer a better explanation of what I built. I used a piece of galvanized sheet metal 24x36 I purchased at Home Depot. I bent a 1 1/2" 90 degree leg on each side. I cut 2 pieces of 1x4 21 inches long that sits inside the ends of the box. 2 pieces of 1x4x36 completes the box and is attached on the outside of the metal box. A 1/4x1x22 1/2 strip is attached to the bottom at the ends. Now the sheet metal is completely trapped by wood. A few pan head screws attach the long side legs to the 1x4 sides.

That is slick. I love the fact that the roost acts like a handle making it even easier to move around.
