I had my first hawk attack today; the hen seems alright, she got all the feathers on her back pulled out, poor thing. But it's got the flock and me on edge.
I've free-ranged for two years now, half of the property is a wooded area, the other half is open, and I've never had any issue with predators. I've read a lot on keeping hawks away, i have a fake owl on the top of the coop, i move it around every once in a while.
The problem is i can't to anything that makes the yard less attractive, like hang up reflective things.
I'm wondering if anybody has a different way?
Thanks so much in advance, i figure if there's any method i don't know about someone here would know it.

This works great!:

Sorry for your loss...
really tho, a secure run is the only thing guaranteed to keep them safe,
good to have one during times like this....it's prime migration season.
Doesn't mean they can never free range again.

I use IPM (Integrated Pest Management) for almost all my pest and parasite issues. That means some level of loss tolerated and measures taken do not cost more than the losses that might otherwise be incurred. Seasonally, I do the free-range bit with most of my hens and all the juveniles. The latter in particular are susceptible to hawk depredation. I use a combination of approaches and make adjustments as needed. Not all components are essential to realize at least some benefit. First I provide cover patches (not plural) that even a Coopers Hawk cannot fly through. The cover patches also can break line of sight. Secondly, I have at least one fully adult standard-sized rooster free-range with the most vulnerable birds. Such roosters have demonstrated time again a willingness to take on Coopers Hawks on the ground when the latter is after other chickens. Thirdly, when practical I have birds partially bounded by a perimeter fence that keeps them concentrated where other protections measures are in force. I also have dogs that come running when the chickens give alarm calls. I will also pen most suscteptable
