I rescued this lil one from a dog's mouth. Knowing nothing about poultry, I thought it was a wild turkey chick at first. I've since been told it's a Barred Rock roo. Got online and took a crash course in raising chicks- he's been with us a week and seems to be doing great, so we are going to build a coop and get him some company. And thus, now am a chicken person and need all the help I can get. Mainly what I'd like right now is a second opinion- roo or not?

I do not know enough to tell you the sex, but I did want to say well done on the rescue....and welcome to the world of chickens!

I have BR hens and their legs are much smaller. I am not sure but it may be a boy. The hens are sweet and either way you will be glad to have him or her.

Kudos to rescuing the baby and

Not knowing the age, but taking a stab at it, *I* think you have a pullet. BUT there are others on BYC far more knowledgable about sexing chicks by feather than am I!!!!

But, if you have a roo, he needs some ladies. About 10 of 'em (but he can survive with one or two - the question is will THEY? Roosters can "over-mate" hens). If she's a pullet, she needs more girl-friends. She doesn't need a rooster unless YOU want her to hatch chicks (or you want to incubate fertilized eggs).

And I, too, welcome you to BYC and the wonderful experience of having chickens!

I'm gonna vote pullet on this one. Keep in mind now that I know absolutely nothing about BR's.

Edit: I forgot...

I have no idea what gender your chick is, but it is cute! (All chicks are cute but yours is special 'cause you saved it!!)

WARNING: BYC IS VERY ADDICTIVE!!
I think your chick is about 3 weeks. But don't quote me 'cause I am no expert. Your chick looks like it is the same size as our chicks and our chicks are 3 weeks.

Thanks all. We definitely intend to get him/her some buddies. I've been wanting to get into poultry and this was the push we needed. The lil guy is my buddy too, follows me around and likes to ride on my shoulder when I'm walking around. Peeps constantly and makes songbird noises when it sees me. Boy or girl doesn't matter to me, I'm in love. But it would be helpful to know.

! Very cute chick, whatever it is. I'm no expert on breeds outside of my familiar [or breeds in that matter, baha] but I do think it's a pullet.
