I never thought I would be as "in love" with my chickens as I have become - I never cared for birds like parrots much so I did not foresee my backyard flock becoming such a consuming hobby. Everyone that knows me knows I have a soft heart and who to call to find any kind of animal a new forever home. Well I got a call over 4th of July weekend from a woman who's neighbor's chickens were raiding her garden on a regular basis. She says they have been roaming freely for weeks - no food, no water, nothing provided for them. She called her neighbor who said he was tired of them and had too many - especially roosters so he "turned them loose" and if she caught them and brought them back over to his place he would just wring all their necks. Great! Why didn't he just give away his extra roos? I can't understand people. Anyway, she says she thought of me since she knows I have chickens now and would I want a silkie and a few others. Well, of course!!! I went on the 4th to pick them up and yes, as it turns out 2 are roos. BUT, two are hens and very pretty ones I might add! One looks kind of like an OEGB crossed with a Light Brahma and the other hen is a blue splash cochin banty - can't believe someone would just turn them out to fend for themselves. The two roosters look like one silkie - not sure of his color - and one RIR and cochin cross roo. All look like nice young birds. Can't believe in these economic times someone would release not one but 2 laying hens! Well, anyway didn't mean to start ranting but I wanted to share their story and show off pics of my new birds, lol! Here are my new rescue birds.....
Please let me know if you think I got the two cross birds right or what else you think they might be. Thanks for letting me share!
