Hello!

I rescued a pullet who I'm guessing to be about 2 months old from a bad situation. I found her and her siblings (one of them was dead) in a tiny pen out in the sun (we've been having a heat wave in Maryland... It was 99 degrees that day with a heat index of 111 degrees.) with no shade, no clean water, and no food. It was one of the most horrible things I'd ever seen.

All of the chicks were totally pale.... No color on their faces or combs (the mille fleur cockerel even had no color). They were obviously malnourished and dying of heatstroke.

After some food and some water, the next day, about half of them were moving around like normal, but three were very touch and go. Now, three days later, I just have one that is still really struggling. She doesn't move around much, and mostly stands around with her eyes closed all day. She doesn't have any respiratory issues, and her lungs sound fine. She is pooping.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions, as I don't feel like she's progressing fast enough. Or, maybe I'm overreacting, and it's just going to take a long time to recover? Let me know your thoughts.

This is what I have done so far:

-providing lots of regular water, electrolyte water, and molasses water (she wasn't drinking much previously, but drank a ton this morning)
-providing access to lots of different kinds of food (medicated chick feed, an organic fancy seeds and stuff blend off chicken feed, unsalted sunflower seeds, watermelon, egg yolk, mealworms [she went crazy on the mealworms last night], and Harrison's rescue mash [I got her to eat a little from a syringe yesterday, but she's too small for me to tube feed.])
-keeping her inside in the air conditioning with some trips to visit her siblings
-giving lots of love

Here are some pictures of her:

And her poop:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I should mention that I know, whatever her breed is, she isn't meant to have much color on her face and comb. That being said, if anyone has an idea about her breed, I'd like to know, too. Though the pictures make her feathers look a little grey, she is all white with maybe a tiny yellow tint.

TYIA!

Boosting for help!

I checked on the others after posting this this morning, and two others are looking similar to her ☹️.

Is it just a waiting game?
Hey how'd she come out? Did she succumb to her illness or make a recovery? I wanted to suggest the possibility of coccidiosis or sour crop. I lost four to sour crop and two survived. I blame myself..live and learn I suppose. I'd like to hear an update ☺️ as I'm hopeful for you. (Bit late as I forget I have this forum to turn to)

She passed. :( I think she was too far gone from the heat stress. She never pepped up. Her sister has been having trouble, too, but she's recovering. Send your good, healing vibes.

How horrible, the owners should be … actually I don’t know … I can’t think of anything … treated as if they were dogs at least (with a sensible head on).
You don’t want to know what I’m thinking with my emotional head on 😠
Alternatively, and giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe the owner was very sick or died 🤷‍♀️

No, it's a regular family, and the 18 year old son tends to the chickens. He sells the eggs at a little stand. They moved down the street. They're all healthy, functional adults. Horrible people, but all functional adults.

That is appalling and I am lost for words. Some people are 🤷‍♀️
I have a man near me whose son visits from time to time and burns polystyrene in his dad’s garden. Any remains the hens peck at. Drives me to distraction and the number of times I’ve planned their escape can’t be counted but i know he would just restock. After being treated so badly they are then chased and axed. The amount of terrified crying just reduces and reduces.
Last time I stood in our garden and cried.
