Well this is just a quicky to let you know about our ex-bats!
Our new ladies are here:- Valerie, Maggie, Pearl and Ivy!
We're utterly amazed at them! After all the research I've done into battery hens I think I was expecting to get 4 bald, scabby reclusive birds......but instead, we've got 4 bright, clever alert hens who are pecking away at their water bottle and observing all the interesting new things around them! They even like being stroked and talked to and are already establishing a pecking order!
So pleased with them.
It's way too cold here tonight to put them in their shed, so they're in a cardboard box with an upturned laundry basket over it!!! They actually seem to really like it!
I also have to add that poultry farmers (particularly intensive method farmers) are often portayed as evil hen haters who treat their birds cruelly, but what I saw today has changed some of my opinion. Spacious, warm and airy sheds and bright and chirpy hens....albeit in cages but nowhere near the rugby scrum I'd been imagining. So although we here at BYC don't like ANY sort of hen cages, it's always worth seeing things for yourself before making judgement! And it's the consumer who has final say and sadly we're all more concerned with cheap meat and eggs.
Will update and post pics soon.....
thanks for all your help!
