Wynnie is a 6.5yo SLW. Three days ago I found her sitting kinda slumped left sideways in the dust bath. Her left eye was extremely swollen with a huge hanging (from eyelid to below the ear) and dripping bubble. I thought she was dying. I brought her into my house in a dog cage and made her comfortable. She stood up and was still leaning left even as she walked around. I was considering the option of culling her. Then I noticed a bit of what I can only call a sparkle in her. I have a bottle of Tylan 200 injection so I researched possibly using that orally. I started setting up drinking water with a drop of nutradrench and some chick enzymes. The heat here is in mid to high 90 so enzymes seemed appropriate. I set up her usual flock raiser crumbles about 2-3 cups, but mixed with a sprinkle of powdered garlic and the powdered contents of an oregano supplement capsule. I have empty capsules that I filled six of them half way with a mix of feed, garlic, and roughly 1/12th of another oregano powder. I then use a syringe to draw up the amount of tylan I understood would be approximately appropriate for her weight, 0.5 ml. I opened one capsule, dripped this into it, and closed the capsule. This is how I was able to get the injectable tylan into her orally without trying to get liquid and avoid going down the wrong way. I give this 3 times a day. She has been eating and drinking all along without a problem.
Ok, all that story was to catch you up to what’s already been done. Today she is standing up straight and yelling at me! She hasn’t made a sound in 3 days! YAY!!! So I’m assuming it’s all working. The bubble is quite small now but still leaking. The eye is still swollen shut but significantly less swollen. Now my question is how long do I keep her quarantined? And how long do I continue to give the tylan?

Thank you all in advance. She’s one of my first hens…kinda. My first flock had an accidental rooster that I was able to return in exchange for 2 hens and Wynnie was one of them. She’s too old for egg laying so I’m not worried about withholding her eggs. And I know we can’t eat her because of residual tylan. I doubt I’d be able to eat her anyway ♥️ She’s just going to live out her life in peace.

She has become exposed to possible MG at some point in her life, but the others are probably also exposed. They can get exposed with a new flock member, a wild bird, but they can just be a carrier until some sort of stress causes symptoms to show up. I would let her back with the flock if you don’t need her separated while giving Tylan. Tylan 200 dosage is actually 0.01 ml per pound of weight, given 3 times a day. So I would reduce the dosage for a total of 5 days.

Oh! I had read the dose was 0.05. 🤔 I have been watching the flock but I don’t see any signs as of yet in anyone else. I thought any chicken with a respiratory infection had to be removed from the flock. One place I was reading said 30 days but another said 3 days so I am confused. I admit it’s easier to give meds 3 times a day by having her separate. But I’m worried about reintroducing her.
So if the eye isn’t healed after 5 days I should still stop the medication?

Wynnie is much perkier, yelling at me and finally feeling well enough to sit on the perch in her cage instead of the floor! Her eye is still swollen and weeping but no where nearly as much!
Friday afternoon will be the end of 5 days of treatment with Tylan 200 injection given orally. I’m not sure her eye will be healed and suspect it will still be dripping. I thought she would need to be quarantined until she was healed. I do not see any signs of infection in any other flock members.
I’ve been told that after 5 days I should discontinue the medicine. Is this correct even if her eye is dripping?
I’ve been told she can rejoin her flock right now. Isn’t that a danger for the flock? If not I’ll need to put her in an introduction system because it’s close to 4 days she’s been separated. I’m hopeful that you’ll all say she can go back to the flock even if she’s still dripping and that she won’t need further treatment 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I would keep her near her friends if possible inside of a wire dog crate with food and water. That way she can remain a part of the flock, and it won’t require that she be separated away and possibly pecked when she returns. Respiratory diseases are spread by carriers. The others have probably already been exposed the same time she was, but you are welcome to separate her if you wish. She might also have been pecked in the eye. It is hard on them to be gone, and then brought back in, since she might get picked on. You can give the Tylan for a couple of extra days if she still has swelling and eye bubbles. Terramycin or plain Neosporin can be applied into the eye twice a day after cleaning it.

From everything I’m reading MG is highly infectious and now I should keep a closed flock. Winnie was looking better in that her eye was beginning to open and I wasn’t giving Tylan anymore. I put her in a cage in my flock for reintroduction. However, a friend who has been raising chickens for generations came by and said let me see her and pointed out the black throat and a few other things told me that quite frankly, he didn’t know why she was alive. Anyone that gets to this point does not make it as long as she has already lived. he brought me some medication that he injected her. He has a Chicken vet that he refers to. She has been removed from the flock for now and is still alive and is doing better every day. I never intended to sell chicken meat, or live chickens. So I am already a closed flock. I am assuming I can add any baby chicks that come along, but I can never offer chickens to anyone else. I don’t use antibiotics on my chickens, but Winnie is the exception because she’s already too old to lay eggs and she’s just living out her life as the old lady of, the flock.

What is that about black in the throat? Do you have a picture? What antibiotic did your friend use to inject? Are you supposed to do it again? I really would try to get her back with her flock as soon as possible. The longer she is gone, they may attack her. She would feel more comfortable near them. Hopefully, you won’t see any more outbreaks in the future, but it could happen during any time of stress, such as molting, freezing weather, and others.
