I have been fighting this respiratory illness since I’ve got these birds (believe they came home with this and Cocci.). My heart can’t handle
Seeing this baby suffer anymore, so unfortunately I believe I am getting ready to put it down. But I have 1 bird with the same mouth mucus, (no nose) and weak. And another not really weak but acting strange and not wanting to eat. This whole batch of birds has not been growing well and seem thin. Even with food and water. :barnie I was going to start injectable tylan. But unsure of dosage. I’ve been told 1cc per lb 6-8 days. But these being chicks of course, wasn’t sure what to do. But I don’t want to loose them all. I’m not sure this BCM has hope. It won’t eat and only getting fluid from me. Is it worth even treating this bird? Or just culling? My others I believe there is hope for. But the BCM is super swollen under neck. So I’m not sure what I’m dealing with here. Just respiratory illness, or something else? Thanks so much!

I'm so sorry :hugs

Injectable Tylan50 can be given orally at 0.25ml per pound of weight 3 times a day for 5 days. For a baby that small, I would probably give 0.10ml 3 times a day for 5 days - this would be just a few drops really, if you can get some 1cc/ml syringes it will be easier to measure.
That's a lot of mucous coming out of the beak for such a tiny baby, does it have any lesions or canker inside the beak? The Tetracycline didn't help at all or is this a different chick?

As for culling, that would be up to you. Sadly, I would consider it, especially if you already have an existing flock of chickens. Respiratory diseases are contagious and make birds carriers even if they recover. The chicks that all have had contact with the sick ones would be considered carriers too. I can't tell you how badly I feel for you and I can't imagine how upsetting this must be.
If you decide to put her down, it would be wise to get some testing to find out what you are dealing with. The neck swelling is concerning, but it could just be from inflammation and mucous. What state do you live in, I can look up your state lab for you if you wish to do that:hugs

Of course all I can get my hands on is Tylan 200. Everywhere around me is sold out of Tylan 50 (back ordered) and this was the last bottle. (Has to drive 30 mins to just get a hold of this). I could only find a 3cc syringe. Any suggestions on where to buy a 1cc syringe? Any idea on dosage for Tylan 200? I know it’s less common. Yes same chick unfortunately. I havent noticed any lesions or anything else. Besides the day after i brought it home had a runny nose and kept blowing snot bubbles but was otherwise happy and healthy. The swelling just happened the night before last and yesterday. Which is when more mouth mucus appeared. The last 2 days it has gone down hill quick. The Tetracycline seemed to be working up until this. Though, It’s possible the dosage was too little because of being “gun shy” so to speak. It’s definitely very frustrating and sad, and I certainly don’t think I’ll be going to this breeder again. I just got some Ayam Cemani from her. They seem to be doing ok but we’re in same brooder before I quarantined. Gahhh. My older birds get Oregeno often so hopefully it will help keep them strong. But they currently aren’t in any contact with the brooder babies. And I wash well. I love in NC and would definitely appreciate you finding a lab for me. Once again, thank you so much!

If you give the Tylan orally, you can make Tylan 50 from 200. Take 1/4 ml of the 200, and add 3/4 ml of water and mix well. Then give 0.1 ml. Most drug stores will sell you a few 1 ml syringes if it is legal in your state. Call around.
Thanks so much! How many times a day?
