My girls and roo had fowl pox a couple weeks ago and everyone was recovering great and I thought we were done. No one ever had lesions in their mouth. I noticed last night some girls were sneezing and I figured it was from sifting the sand in their run. I then noticed some girls were rattling/wheezing with breathing. I went the backyard FB page and ordered tiagard on Amazon and that will be here tomorrow. I ran out to tractor supply and put vetrx on the girls that seemed to be rattling and sneezing more than the others. I put nutridrench in their water for today. Is there anything else I can do? Can this happen after they have dry fowl pox? It seemed to come on so quick!

Hi,

They could have lesions on their trachea causing rattling, sneezing and trouble breathing. The Tiagard should help regardless of the cause of it.

It could also be their immunity systems were weakened, so I'd put them on Poultry Cell (vitamin) water for a few days.

I would be sure to follow up after the Tiagard with probiotics for a week or so.

I hope they're doing better and will recover completely!

TiaGard or Denagard are specific antibiotics for treatment of mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG, CRD.) Fowl pox is a virus spread by mosquitoes. It lasts about a. Month, and can be ac ompanied by secondary infections.

I've had some that have sounded awful and then after the tiagard have bounced right back. Our rooster was down and sounded awful for 2 days. Now he is back crowing and his normal rooster duties. I have 2 hens though that are not bouncing back at all. Today is day 5 of the tiagard and I am going to switch to nutridrench tomorrow. I'm just at a loss and don't understand what is happening. I'm not sure what else I can do to help them. The two that aren't doing well I gave some yogurt last night and they perked up a bit. I've been syringe giving them water because I'm worried they aren't drinking enough.

The problem with fowl pox is if they get a secondary infection, they can have a harder time. MG is one of those things that can show up with pox, when their immunity is down. Although the antibiotics can treat symptoms of MG, they can get further secondary infection or air sacculitis which may be difficult to recover from. Make sure the hens are taking enough of the medicated water, and eating well. The supplements can also help.
