One of my oldest Silkie hens (about 5 years old) has been having what I might consider rather major respiratory issues. Today concludes our second 10-day course of Tetracycline. My daughter thinks bronchitis, but I would have assumed some sign of improvement after administering antibiotics twice. On better days, her breathing is just raspy and wheezing. On the worse days, it rattles and she has to lift her chest and head to inhale with her mouth ajar. She is eating and drinking fine. No unusual behavior of note. No other member of the flock (6 birds total - all Silkie hens) appear affected. I was wondering if perhaps she has "hay fever" or seasonal allergies. Can chickens be given antihistamines? Any other thoughts?
