After a long battle with coccidiosis, malnourishment and respiratory infection induced mucus, BB decided she had enough. She passed in my moms arms at around 8pm, August 25 2021. We are extremely grateful to have access to a vet who helped us treat her coccidiosis which she recovered greatly from after 3 days. At this point she was drinking water and walking outside with her then 6 week old chick Phoebe. She took a turn for the worst when we found mucus dripping from her beak in the morning a couple days later. We brought her back to the vet who gave us some Baytril. We were 5 days into her treatment now, her mucus was all gone but she was in the worst condition yet. She would be choking on her syringe food and gasping for breath even when she wasn’t being fed.
I am extremely grateful for all the help I’ve received from various accounts on BYC, it really helped me get through this as a first time chicken owner dealing with this extremely sick bird.
BB wasn’t just a chicken to us, she was a pet. We value her like we do my cats and dog. She will remain a lesson to me forever, not only in the illnesses that can affect a backyard flock but the sheer perseverance and grit that animals have, even until the very end. All the anxiety and guilt I have is settled as I know we did everything we could for her. I thoroughly believe in afterlife for animals and I know she will stay with me and the flock in spirit. I know she chose this way to go even before she came to earth and she knows the love we have for her.
I seriously couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful chicken, so thank you BB for that. Your memory will live on with us through your chick Phoebe.
Here is BB and Phoebe on hatch day.
