We finally got through processing our S&G birds (100 Johnny Grays, 50 Red Rangers and 50 Dixie Rainbows). Out of 200, 172 made it to the processor. 3 dead were my fault the rest were defective birds. 6 birds I didn't even take to the processor because they are Bantam sized (at 11 weeks). We had a size consistency problem from the start that followed through to the bitter end! I really don't want to go into all of the problems we have had with these birds but if you think you want some S&G birds then read some of the past posts. We haven't had much luck with them. We had weights ranging from 1.1pounds to 5.9 pounds. That's right , that wasn't a misprint 1.1 pounds ............................ at 11 weeks. The majority of birds were in the 2.0 to 3.5 pound range. 70% of the grays made it to 4.0 to 5.9 pounds. So, what that means to me is that I will lose money on 50%percent of these birds. 35 of these birds I will lose 100% of my costs on(below 2.0 pounds). These birds were fed a custom blended diet that was formulated by a poultry nutritionist at Fertrell. Feed wasn't the problem or all of the birds would be stunted. Management was the same (Day Ranged) for all of the birds. Management wasn't the problem. The problem was S&G Poultry genetics!! All I heard before we bought these birds was how good S&G was and how good their birds are. I reported all the problems I had with these birds to S&G and I still haven't heard from them, not one word. So take it from a (commercial grower) Buyer Beware of S&G Poultry.

See I find that the broilers will range just as much as the Kosher Kings. There are too many kinks yet with colored broilers for me to make the switch.

When people try to develop a colored broiler they forget one thing...white feathers... the reason for them is a clean finish... you miss a pin feather on a colored broiler your customers will raise a hissy fit.

Your bad luck isn't your fault, these birds are bred to range and still out preform a normal chicken... but they don't. Too much inbreeding in my opinion.

The best "colored" broilers to raise are Hubbards. They have a very good program and they are known global. www.jmhatchery.com raises these birds, his strains are from Hubbard.

Nebuniram.
The Grays were the best of the batch. There was too much inconsistency with the rest.
I wonder how the J.M. Hatchery birds do? They are supposed to be the true Label Rouge genetics.

My J&M birds did great. They were consistent in size, and grew at the expected rate. Wh processed 75 of 100 at 12 weeks and they were all 4-5lbs. We held back the other 25 (smaller hens) for 2 weeks and had them processed yesterday. They ranged 5-6 lbs. I was very pleased with these results, and will be raising all colored range birds next year. I have 3 groups of Dixie Rainbows here now. The size consistancy is not great but not horrible either. My problem is my first set is 12 weeks old and not even close to processing weight. They need another 2 weeks is my guess. They have had lower food consumption, but those extra weeks are not worth it to me. I'm not happy with my results and do not plan on ordering anymore.
