One of my chickens stopped laying over six months ago. This was preceeded by a period of her laying soft, malformed yolks with some or no shells and some which were a yolky mess. Today she laid a perfect egg. Can anyone shed any light on why this sequence has happened.

Some hens will go through a spell of laying malformed eggs as hormone levels are changing prior to a normal 'break' in production. Others will evidence the same thing because of an ovarian or reproductive tract infection. The good news is that she has resumed normal production.

Curious...how old and what breed?
Did she molt after she stopped laying?

She is a 18 month old Bluebelle. She did not moult until some months after she stopped laying

I have a similar but different problem. My chickens stopped laying last fall due to their molt (I assume) and have layed only about 3 eggs since (in 4 months)! Will they ever start again??
