I don't think that's what @Shadrach was getting at.
Free ranging chickens is great as long as one is prepared for possible losses, up to one's entire flock getting wiped out, because sadly that does happen sometimes.
Judging by the number of "devastated" threads here, it seems as though a lot of people are not ready to deal with such losses.
