About 10 years ago my family had to move from our 3 acre farm on which I grew up to a neighborhood in town because of space constraints in our old little country home. My favorite part of living there from the time I was in Kindergarten to 6th grade (when we left) was raising my chickens. I had a flock of about 20 at its peak, but in the year before we had to move almost all of them got killed by raccoons (I HATE raccoons, hence the username) and the rest we gave away. I had some absolutely beautiful Gold Laced Polish hens and white Silkies along with your standard Barred Rock, Rhode Island Reds, Araucanas, Cochins, and Frizzles.
Now, years later, I'm moving back to that old farm and I'm restarting my flock! I'm so unbelievably excited! I'm choosing breeds that will be good for free range (all heritage breeds and true bantams) and am in the process of restoring my old chicken coop. The breeds I've selected thus far (in order of priority/which ones I want first): Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks (these two will be my layers), Old English Game, Silkies (brood hens/natural incubators), Sumaras (cute, tiny chicks), Nankins (breed preservation), Araucanas (green eggs), Polish, White-faced Black Spanish, Sultans, Frizzles (ornamental). Quite a list, I know, but I'll build it up over time most likely, starting off with the more common breeds (I've already found a local who will provide me with already laying Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Old English Game, and Silkies (might be day old chicks, might be pullets; depends on what he's willing to give up).
Anyways, I'm from Searcy, AR if anyone wants to drop by and see my flock. It's good to be back on backyard chickens. I used to come here all the time years ago.
