We are new to chickens. Our "babies" are six weeks old today - three Rhode Island Reds and three Plymouth Rocks. From the day we got them home (three days old - so cute!) one of the Rhode Island Reds clearly showed a more bossy and protective behavior than the rest. We named him/her Roosty, not knowing if it's a cockerel or not. He/she appeared to develop slower than the rest - tail feathers took weeks to emerge. However, the comb development is further along than the rest. We still see him/her being aggressive, running in front of another chicken, jumping straight up, pushing the chest forward, pecking. I believe some of these behaviors suggest a cockerel, but also understand that a young hen can behave like this. I don't see the neck having multiple colors and don't see tail feathers growing down, which I understand would be the case for a cockerel.
I've attached a couple of pics - any idea if this is a male or a female???
