What sort of nature/character do RIR's have? I had, what was supposed to be, one awhile ago and didn't enjoy her all that much. She was very bossy, hyperactive, flighty. But having read more about them that doesn't sound typical? Also she was a paler orangie colour so I think she may have been a bit of a mixed breed.
Now I'm looking for day olds (as the eggs under my broody don't seem to be hatching) and the only ones nearby are RIRs so I'd like to know more about them as a backyard/pet chickens.

It depends on their breeding and source. I have some show bred RIR. They are extremely docile and don't make any trouble. They also didn't lay well, they are older now, and don't lay at all now.

Hatchery bred birds or ones from those lines from my reading are as you described yours, lighter in color and they lean toward aggression. They do lay better though.

So it depends what you are wanting them for. Generally show bred birds are big and docile and hatchery are bred for production.
