This is my first experience with raising chickens. I bought some RIR chicks locally and I want to know when and how I can determine the males from the females.

I know on my RIR, that the boys got BIG combs really quick and the girls did not. They seemed to progress a lot faster and got big quick.

! Some general signs to look for are combs becoming larger and more pink or red, those might potentially become the roos. Also, the roos will tend to do chest bumping. Sometimes the hens will do this too, but mostly the roos. The size of the chick (body & thickness of legs) can help determine gender too. Hope that helps a little.
