Until this morning I was sure this is a pullet. Mary Kathleen is a Rhode Island White from Ideal. Her sister, Mary Elizabeth (also a RIW) got hurt a couple weeks ago and has been in the house. We just took Mary Elizabeth outside today and have her separated from the rest of the flock.

I hadn't thought anything about the comb/wattles on M.K. until I saw the two "sisters" next to each other. My 10 month old RIR pullets have a comb/wattles that are similar to Mary Kathleen, but now I'm starting to wonder! Her body looks the same as the other hens, she doesn't act like the EE roo that's the same age, no crowing, etc. Could the two RIW's just be developing at different rates, could one be a different breed, or is one hen a ROO?

What do you think? They are almost 18 weeks old.

Mary Kathleen is on the left and Mary Elizabeth on the right.

No, Rhode Island Whites do not come single combed-they are rose combed only. Also they are not a RIR/White Rock cross. They are a seperate breed unto themselves.

I was talking about the Hatchery RIW's being a cross.. I know that the Rhode Island White are a seperate breed unto themselves.
I think they were a cross of the Partridge Cochin, White Wyandottes and Rose Comb White Leghorn?

Last night we saw "Mary Kathleen" in the coop checking out the nest boxes. DH saw MK in there again this morning. Hmmm....

I wish I hadn't named this chicken after my mother!

He's still too young, it takes some longer than others to get sickle and good tail feathers. At 18 weeks (about 4.5 months..) he'll take up to about 1-2 more months before he even begins getting them, (or by 6 months he may have them..)
