Yesterday was incredibly hot here. The humidity factored in keeps the temps feeling like 104 in the heat of the day. My chicks are nearing 5 weeks old so I figured it was a good day for a treat.
If you can tell the waterer is sweating. I keep ice in there so the water is nice and cold.
For their big treat I made a large pot of rice and chopped several whole boiled eggs (I get fresh eggs from a friend) and mixed it well. After refrigerating it until very cold I mixed in about 1/2 of a quart of fresh homemade yogurt. It was a real cold treat.
At first they weren't sure what to do with it. They walked around and looked at it but it took a while for them to figure out it was food.
When they realized what it was after a few hesitant pecks it was gone in under 10 minutes. The bowls were so clean I think they licked them. LOL
I am not raising my birds strictly organic (but I did think about it). I do give them good things to eat, I don't use medicated feeds, the barns have no pressure treated lumber, no pesticides on the field where they live, etc. The yogurt is made from pasturized milk but it is not homogonized and it is produced by local farmers who do not use hormones, antibiotics and medicated feeds.
We certainly are living the good life.
