I am looking into getting some ringneck pheasant chicks for pets. I have pigeons and ducks now. Is it reasonable to add these birds to the mix as pets? I know that often they are raised for food, but that wouldn't work for us.

If I got them how would I house them over winter? How hardy are they? Would they stick around the property once I let them go?

Thanks so much for any insight/advice.

Well, I'm not looking for "buddies" - my pigeons and ducks aren't buddies either. I just wouldn't plan to eat them, just enjoy their presence. Seriously, does everyone only raise these beautiful birds for food?

Nothing wrong with keeping them just to enjoy, but as has been said, you'd have to keep them in a fully enclosed pen or they'd just run off most likely.

They are very hardy and can generally handle the winter fine.

I've had mine for almost 1 year, and they survived our mid-michigan winter just fine. I have 12 eggs in the bater now, and more waiting to go into the second one. I keep mine in a 6x10 dog kennel, have some habitat for them to hide in, and they seem to be happy. I have three birds. I"ll find a pic.

I wouldn't raise them in the same pen with pigeons or ducks.

Pen them in there own enclosure is best..

my one pen 25x100=2500 sq ft... only has 13 birds(1 male to 12 hens in it and i can add many birds to it if i want to..
Look at how tall the grass is because they cant keep it down.

Then the pen attached to the other side has more pheasants in, that pen is 25x50=1125, still more room for more birds if wanted
only has 11 birds in it..1 male and 10 hens
