Taco was our favorite chicken from our first round of backyard chickens. She was a Barred Rock. She was the alpha but not by bullying - she was their leader. Taco stood up to our dog when he got out of control playing. Taco alerted the others whenever a hawk came near and hearded her friends under the shrubs and called for us to come help them. She was friendly with my kids and always let them hold her.
Taco stopped laying in March, at just under a year old but seemed healthy and maintained her alpha status. Suddenly the past few days she looked the way we knew she must have been concealing all this time. She was calm to the end when I swaddled her in a dish cloth and felt nothing when I ended it in an instant. The hardest thing I have had to do in a long time.
Goodbye Taco. Rest In Peace in Chicken Heaven. I hope they have grapes and pizza crust up there.
