Matilda the Brave. 3/10/19-1/8/22. The first to explore a new area, a new item, a new food. A White Leghorn with a voice you instantly recognized.

Last summer during a heat wave Matilda was doing poorly. Investigation revealed waterbelly aka ascites. Incurable, but I was able to drain it to make her comfortable. I needed to do it a second time that summer. She was happy as a clam till October when it flared up again. Probably the stress of molting brought it on this time. Once again We made her comfortable, happy as a clam.
Last night she was strutting around talking to the other hens. This afternoon I saw her huddled into a ball, tail down, looking so miserable I knew it wasn’t good. As soon as Bern got home from work we proceeded to begin a draining procedure. Usually she sits quietly but this time she was trying to get away. Suddenly she stopped struggling and I realized nothing was draining. My brave Matilda had passed away in my arms.
We knew this was coming but it just seems too soon.
Rest In Peace Matilda the Brave.
