I can only blame myself! Thought I had them all in from free ranging, it was well past dusk and quite dark out when I got home to put them in their coop. Then let out our 1yr old lab for his free time and was ironing clothes when I heard an animal noise out front. I looked and saw Jack playing with something and told DH that I think Jack has an animal, then I heard a distinct Bawk and said IT'S A CHICKEN!! Soo out he goes and brings in Dominique hens! I couldn't make myself go out there I was scared with what I would find, and didn't even want to see her until I'd heard from him about her condition! He said she has no feathers on her back but otherwise not bad, she was sitting and watching him move in the garage. I go back to ironing and hear again BAWK! I said He's got ANOTHER ONE!! Again Out he Goes! This was one of my BO's and she was not in good condition at all, he'd gotten most of the feathers off her and her whole back end was exposed! I then went out and put Jack in his run and checked the coop to see if he'd gotten entry into the run/coop but no, these girls just didn't return from free ranging and since I don't count the chickens I didn't know any were missing! It was their 1st day free ranging for about a month, so they were just thrilled to be out! I don't name my chickens, but thought these 2 deserved the name Thelma & Louise, they lived together and died together next to each other!
In the meantime, DH has restricted me from free ranging and we should have delivery today or tomorrow of a training collar for the dog! They have a huge run, but I love to see them out and about the yard, I'm just going to have to make sure if I let them out to free range, that I count them before letting the dog out again!! Lesson Learned!
