I have a hen who I think broke or tore her toe nail, to make matters worse it is currently -7f with -30f windchills, so it it’s cold and the blood is freezing on the roost. I put some petroleum jelly on the toe, is there anything else I can do? She’s also being over mated with, so she is run down in general. I don’t have the set up to separate my rooster right now though.

Not much else you can do but try to stop the bleeding. Corn starch or flour will work if you don't have anyone blood stop product. Press some onto the nail with some pressure for a few moments.

I would seriously try to find a place to pen the rooster up for a bit to give her a rest.

Did you finish your post? Was there more to say? Sorry about the broken toenail as they can be very painful for a week or two. I usually just pain a little betadine on them, and they tend to limp a little. Can you post a picture? Is she walking okay?

I’m not sure why it didn’t post the whole thing? But I was saying that it is extremely cold right now -17f with -30f wind chills and the blood is freezing on the roost. I put petroleum jelly on the toe, she seems to be walking ok, but just in general is looking sickly. I don’t know if she’s run down? Is there anything else I can do to help her?

Can you bring her in to a cooler area in the house or garage? A spare bathroom? In the morning, I would try to get her drinking and eating some chopped egg and wet chicken feed. Take a look at her poops, feel her crop in the morning to make sure that it is emptying normally overnight. Look her over for lice and mites. Has she been molting recently, or is she laying eggs? Have you wormed them all lately?

She’s still laying, and her toe looked good this morning, no more bleeding. I snapped a couple quick picks before I had to leave for work, they are really bad sorry! I don’t normally give them bread, but thought it would be a good treat for this brutally cold weather. I am just so ready for a break in this weather.

*Edit* this is their outdoor run too, we have 7 hens, 2 roosters and 2 female ducks right now. I've been trying to rehome one of the roosters also.

Is the blood on the wall and floor from her toe injury? Just checking to make sure that is not poop. Glad that she is doing better.
Yes that’s why I was so alarmed, I thought she ripped her pad or a toe right off, but when checking her over it was just the nail.
