Looks like one of our 7 week old RIR is starting to get in some rather distinct hackle feathers. All our other gals have much lighter colors and softer textures around there necks. Just curious if anyone can give an opinion as to sex.

This is Agnes. She's very loud, tends to wine and yell a lot, and is a wonderful snuggeler.

No comb progression yet another male hackles don't come in for another month. I say Pullet thus far.
It's been interesting seeing the differences between our Barred Plymouth Rocks, and the Rhode Island Reds with their development and temperaments. All our ladies are great snugglers though. They're spoiled rotten 😆

Figure I'd save myself some trouble asking about individual chickens. We have 9 chickens; 4 Rhode Island Reds, and 5 Plymouth Barred Rocks. They are 7 weeks old.

I took a quick video of all the "gals" calling them by name. I'll toss it out here, and see what people think. How many pullets how many cockerels?

Name list, in case I'm hard to understand, in order of appearance:

1. Agnes - RIR (chicken that started this post)
2. Luna - PBR
3. Dorothy - RIR
4. Gladys - RIR
5. Mabel - RIR
6. Phyllis - PBR
7. Noelle - PBR
8. Edna - PBR
9. Clara - PBR

I figure seeing them in motion gives additional angles and info that you don't get from a still image. And yes... We gave all the chickens "old lady names" since they're our little old biddies. Let me know if you need still images of any of the chickens to clarify.

Update: file must be too large. Linking to video here:

Thanks again!

They are precious and I LOVE their names!!!

All are pullets.

I've seen on other posts that people appreciate updates when they search back up these threads. So, here's an update on Agnes, the chicken that started this post.

At 11 weeks we still have questions about our gals. Here's she's at 11 weeks. I'll add updated shots of the other gals too.

When I look at other Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds of the same age, I see a lot more comb and waddle development. Almost none of our chickens have any development on that front at all, and although I'm starting to see some longer tail feathers, I don't see any saddle feathers on anybody.

I know chickens develop at different speeds and Rhode Island Reds tend to be one of the slower breeds to mature, so I figured I'd toss this update out there for posterity.
