RIR Colour Change?

My 2 RIR's are 25 weeks old and laying pretty much every day now. My son and I noticed today that their feathering has become much darker. They haven't molted or anything, but while they were a rich mahogany colour when they were younger, their colouring has gone very, very dark red. It almost looks black when they are in the shadows. Does this make sense? First time for chickens, so just learning this stuff.

That happened to a few of mine too when they reached about a year old. Some of rthem actually went lighter red rather than darker!

Guess it just happens?
