RIR roo - ? on comb damage (2 pics)

I've got a new RIR cockerel, 30 weeks old in quarantine. He appears to have frostbite damage on his comb. But I'd like some other opinions.

Here's a full body shot. Quarantine isn't a pretty space - but it's draft free and has a sunny window.

Don't know the cause, but the tissue looks necrotic by the pic.

Yes it looks like a light case of frostbite. The dead tissue will fall away on it's own.

This is pretty common amongst big roos with bit combs like this. It is frostbite and they comb will be good. DO NOT put any thing that has benzocaine, lidacaine or any "caine" type ointment on it. This WILL kill your roo.

OK, I have a RIR that has a "rose comb". Is this an accepted thing amongst RIRs ?

My RIR roo has frostbite on his comb some but he always gets his waddles wet when he drinks right b4 he roosts and he got a really bad case on his waddles they were very swollen then turned black and half of his waddle on each side fell off, they healed nicely though just looks a lil disporportioned now lol

how cold did it get?

you didn't mention anything about...his head swelling above the waddles and getting puffy...I have one rooster that still has his comb and waddles...the rest are dubbed...over the last 2 winters this poor boy end-up getting frost-bite...he is to old to dub at 30 months...pm me... I tried something this winter that seemed to control the frost-bite...except for the night I didn't do it...

The coldest nights we've had are in the teens....except for a couple weeks ago, there were a couple nights at 7 -8 degrees.

I'm also not sure what his previous coop or living quarters were like. I got him from a young couple new to chickens, with 5 roos too many. He is very tame tho'....like a pet. I suspect the comb damage occured on one of those colder nights if it is frostbite.

I don't think his face is swollen or getting puffy. In that regard, he looks like my other roos. None of my existing roos got frostbite during our small cold snaps....but they do not have large single combs like his either. Also, my coops are draft free and we use heat lamps on the very coldest nights.

ETA: I hope everyone is right and it's only frostbite. If so, he probably won't experience that again living here at our place.
