My beloved legbar died abruptly today within 18 hours of showing the classic "I don't feel too good symptoms" - droopy tail, no interest in food or drink, listless.

The day before she was full of energy, affection, and appetite. Well muscled keel, not fat, very active and happy bird. I feel my birds up each day and her crop was normal.

She was nearing point of lay, so I initially suspected egg binding or just feeling off while her body prepared for her first egg. Before going to work yesterday afternoon, I isolated her from the flock and made a cozy infirmary for her in my room. When getting home that night, she exhibited extreme lethargy and had regurgitated or coughed up some bloody, sticky mucus. Her breathing was labored. Before sunrise I awoke to her death spasms.

I'm devastated. I want to know what happened to my dear friend so I'm preparing to do a necropsy this weekend.

What do you think happened to her, and what should I look for during the necropsy?

I would look at her trachea for signs of blood and yellow gunk. ILT is a respiratory diseases that can cause blood tinged mucus from the beak. It might be good to let your state vet do some histology and testing. Sorry for your loss. Here is a link to find your state vet:

If she had ILT it seems like it was a mild variant because the blood was brown and not bright red hemorrhage blood. Are hens known to die quickly from mild cases?
