im thinking of buying a rhode island red from a person who sells. in your opinion do they tend to be friendly or aggressive? Do they go broody? Do they get along well with other chicken breeds? Are they good layers?

I only have a bantam girl and she lays me a pretty big egg for a banty almost everyday of the week. She's always following me around the backyard and loves to come in to the house for a looks see. She's my little ankle attachment.

I have two RIR, Charlotte and Henrietta. They are very friendly. They follow me around and don't mind if I hold them. They each lay a large brown egg about every day. All of my chickens seem to get along with each other. You should definately get a few RIR.

well i had 4 RiR's and the leader picked on the others until they got all roughed up and eventually died....But i guess that's survival of the fittest. Also to me they are extremely friendly, they let you pick them up (if you can catch them) and they will sit in your arms for awhile. But really most chickens will be friendly with you if you raised them from chicks and gave them lots of love <3 haha

RIR are gentle, of course there is always the exception. But for the most part they are great birds. Big brown eggs and lots of them 260+ a year. They get nice and meaty too. As for going broody.... Not as much. Definately worth having around!!!!

Good Luck and God Bless!

Generally not broody, yes can be friendly, but like all animals if you never hold them and do not interact with them they will be a little more timid. Phenomenal egg producers, 6 out of every 7 days as a rule although more like 13 out of 14 days for eggs.

I love my RIR's they are commical, if you introduce them to an existing flock make sure you give 30 days to make sure no disease cross contamination. Also your existing flock will tkae time to ensure they know their place in the pecking order, dont worry jsut make sure there is no crazy brutality, a bit of pecking initially is to be expected.

This is good info, but it leads me to a question....I was thinking about ordering a RIR from hatchery that has reached 20+ weeks...I wonder what kind of conditions they were raised, and how friendly they may be?

Anybody out there have any thoughts on this.

Thanks, from the New Guy.

I have one RIR pullet, she'll be a year old April 1st, and she is the sweetest, most curious thing. Now, I really hand raise all my babies--meaning I handle them ALOT and really get them good and tame.

I do think it's all in how you raise them. If you just feed and water and don't interact with them much, they will be more standoffish.

I know breeding is a factor, but I do think that it's up to you how tame and friendly a chicken can be.

She has never gone broody--yet. And she gets along fine with the others that are her age--three EEs. She is the boss lady.
