Roo attacked my wife!

Even a 5 pound rooster can hurt you. We've had the backs of our legs scratched to high heaven by previous roosters. That just ain't fun.

I'd eat his tasty butt. Well, not just his butt, the rest of him, too!

Bring a broom into the coop with you, have your wife do the same. If he makes a move towards either one of you, wear his butt out with the straw end of the broom. Don't even let him get close, if he starts posturing unload on him. Keep using the broom on him until he cowers in the corner. No need to hit him any real hard blows, but you want to give him a knock or two. You want to roll him over, kinda push him off his feet. Once you get him off his feet keep hollering and knocking him with the broom. Anytime he postures bust him up. If he is anything like "Big Whitey" was, you are going to have to tune him up every couple weeks.

Note----- You or your wife should NEVER EVER NEVER bend over with your back turned to that joker. He will come at you if you give him the chance. Never send a kid or some one different into the coop with out the broom.

I used a bright yellow broom so it was easy for my rooster to see. He never submitted to me but he was deathly afraid of that $2 broom. Eventually it got as easy as shaking the broom and he would haul spot to the fartherest corner.

By the way Big Whitey was my 2 year old white rock rooster, that joker was one mean sons of my gun. I had a big RIR rooster at the same time, they are suppose to be the meanest, but Redman couldn't hold a candle to Big Whitey.

Also I would like to add--- That is one fine looking rooster. I would deffinitely make the effort to "tame" him rather than get rid of him. A rooster that good looking don't come along very often.

Big Yellow Broom!

Let's see, on the one hand you have this young rooster. A handsome bird for sure, but still one of thousands of handsome young roosters available for your flock. And on the other hand, you have...your WIFE!!! How attractive is she? How many more are available for you? How badly does she have to get injured, or scared, or bothered, before you'll come to her aid? Good grief, man, what are you waiting for?

You say you want a rooster who will protect his flock, what are you doing to protect your mate? Send this roo packing, or invite him in to the table for a special meal with your wife. Let her know you have your priorities straight.

Think about it, in an ideal mixed flock you will have 1 roo to every 10-12 hens. And there are many flocks with no roos at all. That means there's a position available for barely 10% of all roosters hatched to be flock husbands, breeders, or pets. So 90% of all roosters hatched are table fare for humans or animals. Only the BEST deserve to be kept.

I keep 8 roosters in my large laying flock, and every one is a gentleman. I don't have to worry about them attacking me, or the children, or strangers. They are alert to sound the alarm when danger approaches. I don't depend on them to run of predators, I doubt most roosters would do that anyway. I don't have to carry sticks or brooms around them, I don't mess with their heads & make them think I'm an alpha rooster, I don't prevent them from mating around me.

I also keep a pen of young mixed-breed cockerels that hatch from our eggs and butcher them when they've grown. It seems a shame to have to butcher the exceptionally handsome or mannerly ones, but there's no more positions available for flock husbands. You should certainly be able to find another equally handsome rooster with much better manners to husband your flock, and endear yourself to your wife at the same time.
