Let's see, on the one hand you have this young rooster. A handsome bird for sure, but still one of thousands of handsome young roosters available for your flock. And on the other hand, you have...your WIFE!!! How attractive is she? How many more are available for you? How badly does she have to get injured, or scared, or bothered, before you'll come to her aid? Good grief, man, what are you waiting for?
You say you want a rooster who will protect his flock, what are you doing to protect your mate? Send this roo packing, or invite him in to the table for a special meal with your wife. Let her know you have your priorities straight.
Think about it, in an ideal mixed flock you will have 1 roo to every 10-12 hens. And there are many flocks with no roos at all. That means there's a position available for barely 10% of all roosters hatched to be flock husbands, breeders, or pets. So 90% of all roosters hatched are table fare for humans or animals. Only the BEST deserve to be kept.
I keep 8 roosters in my large laying flock, and every one is a gentleman. I don't have to worry about them attacking me, or the children, or strangers. They are alert to sound the alarm when danger approaches. I don't depend on them to run of predators, I doubt most roosters would do that anyway. I don't have to carry sticks or brooms around them, I don't mess with their heads & make them think I'm an alpha rooster, I don't prevent them from mating around me.
I also keep a pen of young mixed-breed cockerels that hatch from our eggs and butcher them when they've grown. It seems a shame to have to butcher the exceptionally handsome or mannerly ones, but there's no more positions available for flock husbands. You should certainly be able to find another equally handsome rooster with much better manners to husband your flock, and endear yourself to your wife at the same time.
