Hi everyone, I would really appreciate your help and advice on this. My roo has been deteriorating for a long time now to the sad state that he's in today.

1) What type of bird , age and weight: Buff Wyandotte, 10 months, he's pretty thin... you can feel his breastbone pretty easily when you pick him up despite the fact that I see him eating well regularly.

2) What is the behavior, exactly. For the past couple of months he's been walking in a strange way... lifting his legs up really high and it seems like he has very poor coordination. He often gets his feet in the water bowl or up in the chicken wire around their coop. Today I went outside to close up the coop and found him standing alone in the pouring rain. He just stood there as I walked over and picked him up. He didn't even try to walk away. Now that I have him inside and dried off, it seems that he is missing lots of his downy feathers under his wings and under his hackles. I can't see signs of any bugs... but what else would be doing this to him?

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? His leg movement has been getting progressively worse for the past 3 months or so. The feather loss is recent.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? No, I have 10 other Wyandottes living with him and they are all happy and healthy.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. No

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. Not that I know of.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all. Yes, he eats and drinks happily. When I feed them a treat of scratch in the morning he throws himself into the mix, just with his crazy gait.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. Poop looks normal.

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? He's had some warm scrambled egg to help warm him up after I brought him in from the rain. He gobbled it right down. Now he just has water and regular pellets which he's been eating happily.

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? I need to take care of him myself. If I'm not able to, I'll have to cull him.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. See below

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use The have a coop inside our barn (lots of ventilation) I use the deep litter method with pine shavings. I'm thinking this must be mites, but I can find any sign of them on this bird and there are no symptoms at all in any of the other birds.

If he eats good but still doesnt weigh much, my first though is worms. Id treat him with wazine, from your local feedstore. Hopefully someone with more experience can help.

i would bet he has worms and/or mites/lice...you cant always see them. find a good wormer and also treat for the pesky bugs....

I agree, I'd definitely try worming, Wazine first then another wormer after. Losing weight while eating well is typical of a lot of worms; the worms are getting the food. Some have reported they actually eat less after they get cleaned out and recovered. If you can't see any bugs at night with a light they might not be there -- but they can be awfully hard to see. I'll give you a couple of links to help you.

You probably need to worm them all.

About lice/mites:

Worm him and I would dust/spray him for mites. I use Sevin dust 5%(walmart in lawn and garden section) or I also have used Adam's Flea and Tick spray(also walmart-pet section). How does his crop feel?

That's a very long time to be ill, in bird time. He needs intervention immediately. Do bolster his nutrition immediately with 3 drops liquid children's vitamins daily (Polyvisol), administered via dropper gently along his beak line so he swallows on his own and doesn't choke. Follow with good tasting treats (e.g. a few cut up blueberries) as the Poly tastes like crud. Alternatively, Rooster Booster or Avia Charge 2000 - use the Poly till you can order one or the other of these in. Baby parrot feeding formula for extra nutrition. Mealworms may raise his spirits and strength as well.

THe goal here is to try to make up for some lost time by giving him the strength he needs to fight back. If the issue is parasites it will help him get through the treatment and recovery.

Hi everybody. Thanks for the responses. I'm going to worm the whole flock this weekend and treat for mites/lice (I'm going to do a whole coop-cleaning along with dusting the birds and the coop) just in case. But I think there's something more going on here because of the very weird way he walks (he tries to avoid walking, and when he does he lifts his legs up really high).

The link from onafixedimcome is making me think:

"The arthritic form (tenosynovitis) usually is seen in broilers 4-8 wk old as unilateral or bilateral swellings of the tendons of the shank and above the hock; it can also be found in much older chickens. The birds walk with a stilted gait. In severely affected flocks, rupture of the gastrocnemius tendon is frequent, and many cull birds are seen around the feeders and waterers. Mortality is 2-10% and morbidity 5-50%. Severely affected birds rarely recover; less severely affected birds recover in 4-6 wk. The infection is inapparent in many birds. Feed efficiency and rate of gain are decreased."

This definitely seems like it could be it. And that would explain why he lifts his legs up and out instead of forward and back. And perhaps also why he's so thin.

We'll take a closer look at his legs tonight and see if we can feel swelling in his tendons. And we'll go ahead with the worming and mite/lice treatment just in case.

I'll let you know how it goes.
