I hope that this means that they will give us some eggs soon! The roo has been mating with our 27 week old Black Australorps (they allow him to mount and don't run away squawking like they used to) for about a week now, but they still aren't laying. Is this normal? It seems like it's taking forever for them to give me some beautiful brown eggs

I know what you mean, and in my experience it took about 2 weeks until the girls started laying.

It is my experence that a hen does not have to mate with a rooster to lay eggs. But the evidence leads me to believe that your hens are nearing the age to start laying probly winthin a couple of weeks, but some young hens take a little longer such as my barred rocks, rooster started mating with a month before i got the first egg. dpops hang in there.

My Wheatens are doing the same thing. The roo does his thing one of the hens squats squawks and goes and sits on the nest for a long time then squawks again and nothing. Glad to see its not just mine doing this.

I don't have a roo, but there was about a 1-2 week wait between the first squat and the first egg. That may transfer to your situation. Get ready!
