I took a chance on am Ameraucana from the straight run at Tractor Supply. It's the only one and I've never had one before. Do you think this is a Cockerel or Pullet?

It’s probably too early to be absolutely sure, but that’s a pretty good sized pea comb, so I would lean cockerel. How old is the bird?

About 4 weeks. It's a pretty chill bird. Very sweet.
In my experience the pea comb of pullets stays pretty flat until they approach the point of lay, whereas cockerels’ seem to protrude and gain volume early on.

It’s too early to say you DEFINITELY have a cockerel based on the comb, but that is my guess. Can you keep roosters?

I can. We have another one in this bunch I'm 99% positive is a Roo. All the hallmarks are there. So keeping 2 would be difficult. We just had to re-home a Silver laced wyandotte rooster because he all of a sudden started attacking the hens and my daughter. He was so good up until then. So friendly. So we're a little Leary of getting attached to the Roos. But this baby is so sweet. It's hard not to get attached.

Roosters can definitely be a gamble! They are so beautiful and outgoing, you can’t help but love them, til they turn their spurs on you. :barnie
