I am constructing a coop from scratch, using primarily reclaimed lumber...as you can see from the pic, I have finished the platform and framed the walls...I have never constructed a roof, and I would like some advice on the most simple method of doing so...it by no means needs to be perfect...just a bit of an overhang and a slight pitch...the dimension of the coop is 4'x5', and materials are at a premium, so I want to make the roof structionally sound, with the least amount of lumber as possible!

Well, I would have built the sides about 1' higher on one side, then slanting up on two sides. Then I would have nailed a few 1x4's from side to side, and a few more across them. Then I would have screwed a metal roof to the 1x4's, with overhang on the high side to keep rain out. That gives you your ventilation.

Haha...well, I can't go back and rebuild...

I am going to install a 1x3 base to the top of the front wall, providing a slight elevation, and then install traditional rafters with a plywood roof...I'm still searching for some tin, or I may go with shingles...we'll see...

You can still add framing to raise up the front to pitch the roof......good place to add ventilation.
If you use shingles, use a pretty good pitch...I think 3/12 or 4/12 is minimum for shingles.

Bigger overhang is better, especially if you have exterior access nest boxes.
