So I began building my coop. I was having a very hard time coming up with a design that I was satisfied with so I decided to just wing it and design it while I'm building. And, well, it's coming out very nice but my original plans all incorporated a very simple flat roof with a 1-2 foot slope. That's gone out the window because somehow instead of building a simple chicken coop I built a frame for a 2 story gabled barn. :wee

It dawned on me this morning that I have no experience installing a metal roof, let alone one that is slightly complicated. I was hoping I could get some pointers on what all is needed so I don't wind up having to take 5 trips to the hardware store or mess up a bunch of pieces.

We did a metal roof... it's sloped. Just needed the specific screws for it, and the pieces to seal the front and back edges. Since it was 100% sloped, we didn't need to worry about sealing any seams (don't know the word for where one side of the roof meets the other lol, Ridge maybe?) I asked at Lowes which screws to use, and they had them right there with the roofing. We overlapped each piece, and so far we've had some serious rains, and not a drop of water got in. My daughter (she's 25) is the one who installed it lol...she just watched some youtube videos on how to do it. We overlapped the front AND back to not worry about any type of fancy edging, trying to keep it as simple as possible. My coop is 6ft long, so we bought 8ft pieces, and each end has a foot overlap.

Post pics and dimensions of your coop so far.

My connection is horrendous out here so I could only get a screenshot to upload. I still have at least one more day worth of framing to go but it's 20'x12', the lower side roof is 12'x about 7 3/4'. Those roofs should be simple enough. The top hay loft area is going to be a gabled roof. I'm not sure offhand what the dimensions would be for that because I'm building this on the fly. I guess my question is, what's the best way to seal that peak on the gabled roof? Just bent some flashing to shape and screw it on?

Nice design. Mine was much more simplistic. I did a simple 12x12 tin roof with a 2in drop over the span of 12ft.
That was basically what I was gonna do at first, something I could finish in a day, then the in-laws came to visit for a week and I decided to build a barn instead lol

Not sure waht you mean by "peak on gabled roof".
If it's this juncture, then flashing would be needed.

Will other end be the same?
What will roof on the square part sticking up be?
Almost looks like a monitor roof, tho it needs some slope too.

Might want to do some graph paper sketching before you go much further, tho maybe it's already in your head, but I can't see there :gig

That's was my thought too...... monitor roof show here without openings.
Adding side openings to that upper portion on both sides can make for great ventilation.

Wasn't trying to step on ya toes but not everybody knows different roofing style names.

Yeah I would add some doors in the top so you could open them in the summer. Hardware cloth covered openings of course to keep critters out.
