I have 3 bantams, 3 bobwhite adults, and just hatched bobwhites babies a couple weeks ago...Last weekend the Roo bit me and broke the skin. 3 days later, I got HORRIBLE FLU, NECK PAIN, HEADACHE, FEVER, CHILLS. The doctor tested me for the flu and it was negative, so she put me on 2 different antibiotics and wants to do a spinal tap. She admitted she doesn't know a thing about animals. Can anyone help me out? I haven't been out of bed in 4 days except for the doctor. THANKS!!!

I dont think it was from the bird...I dont think.. Maybe someone on here will chime in and help ya out. Good luck and i hope you feel better soon!

Did she do a blood culture? If the bird gave you anything like a staph or bacterial infection it would show up. The wound you were bit at, how is it doing? Is it red or draining?

No blood work yet, and the wound is healing fine. What about Histoplasmosis? All the symptoms fit. Anything else from being around the birds and their feces?

I've gotten pecked so many times. And really bruised & broken skin.I just put some peroxide on it.Maybe just a coincidence? Feel Better!

I have read again and again that the test for the swine flu is only about 50% accurate and if you have flu symptoms now ( in the summer when other flu is dormant) it should be treated as flu with anti-viral drugs. I would get a second opinion or go the the hospital. There was a lady in my state that had the test three times negative and ended up in the hospital where they tested using a more accurate test and it was positive but too late.

I don't think the roo bite did anything...personally.

Sounds like you've got a good case of the flu.

You wouldn't get salmonella from a chicken bite, only if said chicken promptly pooped on the bite maybe.

Hope ya feel better.

If you're interested in alternative medicine, try grape fruit seed extract. (GSE) They sell it in a little white bottle at Whole Foods and also on amazon.com. It works SO well. Anytime I feel like I am coming down with something I take 10 drops in a glass of OJ 2-3 times a day for several days, and I don't get sick. It's an antiviral and an antibacterial. It even kills parasites but you have to take it for 5 days to kill them all, then again for 5 days in two weeks...

are you taking any meds that would have an reaction to grapefruit? I take a blood thinner and cannot take or drink any thing grapefruit. but I have been pecked many times and with the blood thinner it usually bleeds, I use benidine, to disinfect it, IMO you need a second opinion from another dr. marrie
