Roos

Don’t forget to check your local ordinances... you may not be allowed to have one. Personally, I like having a rooster because they are your first line of defense against predators and a good roo will always be on the lookout. They also keep the ladies happy 😆 But many people have flocks with no roosters. Some people find roosters to be nothing but a pain in the ass... they bait and switch all the time, sweet little cockerels then turn into nasty sexually mature adults.
 
The only reason you would “need” a rooster is if you want to hatch and raise chicks from your own eggs. A smaller flock will likely be happier without one. A dominant hen will also keep a lookout for threats as well as a rooster.
