I'm looking to start with about 5 hens. Do you need a rooster in the flock or no?

Only if to want fertile eggs and flock protection if they free rangeI'm looking to start with about 5 hens. Do you need a rooster in the flock or no?
Of Course! Good luck!!I plan on giving them a large run to be in during the day. Thank you!![]()
Ditto Dat!!The only reason you would “need” a rooster is if you want to hatch and raise chicks from your own eggs. A smaller flock will likely be happier without one. A dominant hen will also keep a lookout for threats as well as a rooster.
