roost above nest box

We have always raised meat chickens of which is about a six week project. We are now raising egg layers which hopes to be a years project.

Reading through posts, I notice several indications of putting roosts above nest boxes. What is the reason for this?

Also, could a person put egg laying boxes in one location and roosts in another?

Finally, how far off ground should nest boxes be?

When people say "above" I think what they mean is "higher than".

This is so they sleep on the roost instead of in the box.
