Hi everyone,

We have 23 chickens, and have put up 24 feet of roost for them (at the same height) in the coop as suggested to meet the minimum.

I’ve gone out to the coop after dark, and they have about 5-6 feet of roost that is completely empty (2-3 feet on each end). They all pile into the same spot and squish in the middle! 😂. Is this normal? I’m glad we put the extra space but it makes me laugh.

We’ve had zero bullying issues with this group, they are sweet to each other, even with the ones we can visibly tell are at the bottom of the pecking order. Our lowest pecking order hen goes in to roost about an hour before the rest to get her spot and avoid being stuck on the “end”. There are a few that seem to like the end spot by the window and avoid the crowd. 😂 They are a lovely, friendly group!

Here is one of the bars where they left a huge space, along with the ladies that like the window seat!

Wait until summer on a hot evening and take another picture...

Based on the distribution of chicken droppings on "poop hammock" in one of my bigger coops, everyone crowds together on one end of the roost there, too.

Maybe it's to keep warm, maybe it makes them feel more secure to have their "sisters" side by side. Maybe, they're just chickens, and I will never completely understand them.
