Roost bars

My husband is building me a larger chicken coop and he was asking me if there is a certain diameter for the roosting rods in the coop. Do they prefer a certain size or can they make do with just about anything? TYVM!

It gets cold here in the winters, so we use 2x4's for roosts and use the 4" side as the flat surface so they can roost covering their feet for warmth.
