I'm a new chicken mommy and just bought a coop for them. I'm designing the interior from scratch. In planning the roost, I've read that the bars should be 15" apart. Is 15" along the horizontal (left and right) or along the vertical (up and down). My floor space is at a premium and would like to have 3 bars. If 15" along the horizontal, that means I would need to start the roost a minimum of 45" out from the wall.

Suggestions and advice are welcome.

How many chickens? I would put one 2x4 flat side up 12-15" from back wall the entire length of the coop. I cannot see why you would need more than that.
If that coop is 10' wide that would be enough roost for 10ish birds, about as many as coop will hold unless I am way off on my estimation of the size.

Cute coop:)

Thanks Gary. I (currently) have 8 girls that free range. The coop is 6 x 8. I was planning on the bars to go on the 6' side. I'd like to have more than one bar for expansion purposes. :)

My roosts are 2x4. They are about a foot from the walls and they form a rectangle inside the tractor. Nests and feeders are beneath poop trays below. My 4x8 tractor has 21 feet of roost.
