Roost diameter question.

Just tinkering in the coop and thought to ask about roost diameter. I live in a warm climate so frostbite isn't going to come into play. I have some branches that are about 2 inches in diameter and assorted lumber sizes. Anyone better. I am going to be making some perches today too. Thanks - Rick
 
I use 2 x4 s laid with the 4 inch side up and the chickens love it
Same here. Even in climates where frost bite is not a concern, a larger diameter or flatter roost is better for standard size chickens. Although even my tiny Sebrights prefer the wide side of a 2x4. If a roost is small and round the birds pretty much have to literally hang onto it all night. WIth a wider, flatter roost they can settle down on their breast bone and relax their feet more.
 
Great information! Was just contemplating what to do about a roost...large branch or a 2X4. Decision made!
