My coop is 6'x6'. There are 2x4's going up smack dab in the middle on each side. This would be a perfect place to attach a 2x4 as a roost (clear as mud?

). I figured 24" up is as high as I could go with only 3' on each side to jump down. Yes?

I figure I only need one since it will be 6 feet long for 6 chickens. Will it sag if I lay it so they are roosting on the wide side? Would I need a center support? Sorry so many questions, the further I get into this the more I realize I don't' know anything about building. Good thing I bought my coop on Craigslist, I can't do too much harm to it adding a window, vents, roost and painting it.

Should be enough room. I learned the hard way with heavy birds hopping down about 5 feet and one got hurt (minor wing injury)in a mid-air collision due to the limited space and the height

Don'y worry about the 2x4 sagging, currently my 6 RIR roost on a 1 1/2" branch spanning 6 feet and sagging is not a issue

I'll go ahead and make it 24 inches high then. Sorry about your Chicken collision
