Roost question- this might be a silly question but...? :)

When putting up a roost, do I need to build a ramp for the chickens to "walk" up to the roosting spot, or will they be able to fly up there on their own?? (assuming I don't put it ridiculously high, LOL).

Forgive me if this is a dumb question but these are my first chickens

. I'd always thought chickens were clumsy flyers, but I am beginning to wonder after seeing my 2-week old TSC "pullet bin special" (white Leghorn?) flutter rather nimbly from the top of the feeder to the edge of the brooder tank when I'd turned my back for a few seconds to grab some clean pine shavings. She sat up there looking around mightily impressed with herself! Usually the top is covered with hardware cloth....I've noticed them starting to flap around a lot more in there!

So yeah, I'm going to poke around an area scrapyard; my neighbor just got a bunch of good lumber from there, for almost nothing....he says they may even have nest boxes & other poultry stuff available for cheap.....Either way I am sure I'll find something useful but I want to plan it first! Thanks all

Yes, they can simply fly up there to the roosts. My chicks have been impressed (so have I!) with their growing wings, and have experimented all over their brooder. I've heard that Leghorns (and other Meditteranean, light chickens) are more flighty than others, but that is usually a generalization.
